Time lapse

Good morning. I am eating a bowl of creamy porridge with freshly made fig and vanilla jam and a scoop of Barambah natural yoghurt. Amazing. I think we are heading for another week of stunning Autumn weather after the Easter weekend craziness.

We were camping at the farm, and other than a short shower and howling wind on friday night, the weather was amazing. We swam in the river each day and lit massive fires at night, and cooked up a string of feasts. We looked at the stars, saturn and the epic moon through Don's telescope. It was lovely. After 3 days we were pretty happy to get home and into a hot shower and a comfortable bed. Soft.

A still from a time lapse video by the river bank. My phone is full of these things, I am going to share a few.

Chutney Club at the farm was like an exhibition of woolens. Hand knits. Some nice beanies on our littlest members, and a really nice one on our pinkest member. Ha. Even the dogs were chewing on hayseeds.

Our charming host with the most, including chairs and fire and fresh air for 15 people, farmer Don.

And lastly, I made lilly pilly jam. I went native - and I was a little surprised at how few people know what Lilly Pillies are. They are falling off trees all over town, weird spongey little things. Delicious.

Good Friday

At the farm. So good. We picked apples and quinces, roasted things in the Aga, huddled around it all night til we decided to light the bonfire, which we proceeded to run around, and warmed up in the morning with ping pong and coffee. What a good friday - and saturday. Now I have a mountain of fresh crunchy Granny Smith apples to make something of. I did find a recipe for apple beer in the Tasmanian CWA cookery book. I am also considering stuffing and baking some and maybe making a batch of peppercorn jelly.

Yes, I have been slightly deluded into thinking it's holidays here, but I have so much to do, and now, I also need to make apple beer. Whoops.

Legs 11

We rang in the New Year grimy and happy, camping at the farm. We were the great unwashed for three days with waterholes and hot winds and campfires, sparklers and farm kitchen feasts, despite the fire ban. We had killer pizzas in the Aga. We had sun, wind, rain and a rainbow, with incredible skies everyday.

We had a massive gang of campers and kids and visitors and we said a sad but happy goodbye to Annie, Kade, Sailor and Iggy. Oh my god, we will MISS you guys. Almond Land is a long way away.

Hurrah

... for night drives across paddocks with alpacas like fluffy clouds with new romantic haircuts, spotlight by the headlights, perched in the back of a stranger's ute travelling to an abandoned mineshaft deep in the rocky paddock, which is 120 metres into the hillside and turns out to be full of welcome sparrows who flutter in your hair and in your pocket. This is just the sort of adventure I associate with Kade.

We also spotted giant mushrooms on our walk to the waterhole and amateur mycologist Adam took some samples he has since identified as Phylloporus something or other, unique and rather interesting, and me, the amateur orchardist picking granny smiths and golden delicious from the tree (in the hope of making some special harvest chutney club goods) which I guess is not that interesting for all the chutney club begrudgers out there.

The farm

Just back from a night in the Redesdale Hilton (a caravan upgrade on our tiny tent) on the farm, where we lounged in hammocks, planted trees and hunted for chocolate eggs. Nothing is as catching as four year old eggcitement. One way to sneak in a walk around the property is to go on a hunt for an Easter Rabbit. It's also an excuse to find some Quinces and Alpacas.

We had delicious crunchy apples, and campfire cooking by Annie, Kade and Luke, we ate Lamb Shanks with dates, sweet potato, lentils, cinnamon and abit of charcoal, Nonna's beans and spicy King Dory. I roasted and exploded some chestnuts too. We talked ghost stories, UFO stories, mining stories and Dinosaur stories.
