West Space

I'm late posting this, as I have a sick baby. Tonight is the opening of the annual West Space fundraiser exhibition. Here's a sneak peak of my work for the show. West Space are like family, so best look after them.

Material

Again, I've been bad at this. But here is a thing... In 2014 West Space is publishing a new fortnightly edition of MATERIAL edited by Danny Lacy and John Nixon.

Issue No.6 of Material features Dell Stewart's work titled Wood, silk, concrete, rock. Now available from the WestSpace Reading Room, you can buy this individual issue of Material or order the whole 2014 set of 25 by sending us an email.

A little more of it. As the show goes until this Saturday the 20th of October, it has another opening this thursday, and another suite of shows to live alongside for a few days. Thursday 6-8pm. Come along if you are that way inclined, or visit up until saturday. West Space. Embrace the ch-ch-changes. And here are some variations on an Oregon Hexagon theme.

The Yellow Room

I definitely had a good night in my new dress (sorry, awkward photo) It felt like it was made for me – or two of me – and I don't mind having lots of conversations about Muumuus and Kaftans, which I did.

I walked into Sam Songailo's yellow room halfway through the night, a perfect time out, and my new dress was amazing under the lights. It's also amazing under normal light, like a festival all of it's own.

The maxi kaftan is outrageously comfortable, ideal for a quiet stroll in the heat of a martian summer or just hanging in the grid. Speaking of the grid, look how unfussed the small kids are. Anyway, there must be a lot of photos of this one out there, and there are also lots of photos of my show, both here and here. I'll be in the gallery for the next few fridays and saturdays, so do come say hello and maybe try some food in space while I'm there.

Life in Space

I have an exhibition opening next week in the project room at West Space. It's an ongoing ever-changing project entitled 'Life in Space'. I will be meeting there, working there and moving things around in the gallery during the course of the exhibition and the results of that work will be published online. The opening is on thursday the 20th of September from 6-8pm. Stay tuned both here and in space for other activities during the course of the exhibition, or just drop in.

Becoming

Here's a trailer for the next wave of becoming. There's a party for Carol at West Space tonight.

Downsizing... Moving forward...

We are moving house. We got a house! It's nice. It's much smaller than where we are. I must cull some stuff in the next few weeks. That is both good and bad.

There won't be room for a new coffee table, I doubt there's room for the one we've got, despite this, I was coveting Simon's Octahedron coffee table. Yes, Simon MacEwan has been making furniture. Go see it, along with some rather fancy paintings, at West Space now.

Domestic Death Rattle

Is an exhibition by Adam Cruickshank which opens this week at West Space. Though there's never a good time to do your back, some times are more not good, he is in pain, and it's not just art pain. Anyway, I am on call to help with any lifting and picking things up off the floor.

I have somehow managed to kill my keyboard this week, so it is nice to be able to type on this other computer (at the studio) which has a full keypad of letters and no penchant for excessive dddddddd.........oooooooooottttttttttttttttsssssssssss......................

Thursday night at West Space. A potential racket. And so much more. Dare I mention textured walls and glass pebbles.

The High Life

This morning I installed my work for 'The High Life' at Rooftop Bar. The bottom image is Adam Cruickshank's work, also at Rooftop.

The High Life
is a series of rooftop art projects curated by West Space that will be a feature of this year’s Melbourne Food + Wine Festival. The Festival invited West Space to work with contemporary artists to present artworks that reflect upon themes initiated in this year’s festival keynote project ‘The Metlink Edible Garden’. West Space has commissioned eight artists to make new work that responds to ideas around plants and gardens, food sustainability, urban landscapes and environmental concerns more broadly.

Working across some of Melbourne’s best-loved rooftops for the duration of the festival, the artists have also responded to the unique flavour of each establishment. How will artists interpret the hunter/gatherer ethos at Sarti Bar and Restaurant, or the flamboyant cheekiness of Madam Brussels? How will they respond to the understated but oh-so-Melbourne elegance of the Order of Melbourne, or the cool as a cucumber and high as a kite atmosphere of Rooftop Bar?

Artists: Sarti Restaurant & Bar: Hotham Street Ladies + Natasha Frisch
Rooftop Bar and Cinema: Dell Stewart + Adam Cruickshank
The Order of Melbourne: Andy Hutson + Kirsten Bradley
Madame Brussels: Tai Snaith + Carl Scrase

Closing Night Event: Tuesday 23rd March On the closing night, come join us on a walking tour across all four sites: Beginning at Sarti at 5:30pm.

P.S. We love West Space, and encourage all punters to get to the current show in the gallery before it finishes up tomorrow afternoon. One word. Air-dancer.

hi

I've been hanging out in the lovely pene's studio. It's full of all types of goodness. I came home with cumquat marmalade and sparkly angora gloves for me and gloves for adam... THANKS ms Durston! we love them... It's very hard to leave that studio without a new list of clever goodies to covet or without a pile of admiration and also some presents.

... and last night the opening of 'rules of engagement', curated by the charming Mr Feary. Westspace has just re-occured to me, since i live in the city.
